December 2016 Newsletter

DEAR MEMBERS:

Thank you to all of our excellent speakers that presented at our All Day CLE. We had a great turnout and excellent feedback about the variety of topics discussed. If you did not get a chance to contribute to our annual drive for the Covington Food Bank, you still have time. Please make your check payable to “Covington Food Bank” and mail them to 22nd JDC Bar, PO Box 2074 Covington, LA 70434.

Our Christmas Party will be on Thursday, December 15th at Tchefuncta Country Club from 7-10 p.m. All current members and a guest are invited to attend. We will be sending out a pass for members to print and use as entrance into the Country Club gate. If you have any questions, please contact Judy at judy@22ndjdcbar.org. We hope to see you all there.

Finally, it has been an honor to serve as your 2016 Bar President. This year, we created several new section chairs, updated the bar library, built our online attorney directory and implemented electronic payment options for dues and CLEs. In addition to our monthly CLEs, we successfully hosted three All Day CLEs, two of which were practice specific. Most significantly, we were able to support many local nonprofit groups through various fundraising and programming efforts. It truly has been a pleasure working with all of you. I am confident that 2017 will bring even greater news under the leadership of our incoming board. On that note, I am pleased to announce our 2017 Officers: Rene Frederick, President, Tammy Griggs, Vice-President and Justin Marquez, Treasurer.

Elizabeth Sconzert, President

If you have not submitted your online Attorney Directory, you are missing out on potential new clients. We continue to get requests for referrals and this is where we send them. But you must fill out the online form. If you have any questions contact Judy at judy@22ndjdcbar.org.

  • The directory can be searched by name or practice area.
  • The directory not only allows members to find members, but also allows attorneys outside of our area to find your contact information, and allows the general public looking for an attorney based upon practice area.
  • The bar association receives many calls looking for an attorney, if you are not on the list you will loose out on this opportunity for new clients.

The Basic Listing is included in your annual membership dues, but you must be a member in good standing and fill out the online form.

In addition to the Basic Listing, we are pleased to offer a Premium Listing at the low cost of $50 per year. The Premium Listing includes the same information as the Basic Listing, plus a link to your website, map to your office, and a photo.

ATTORNEY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PRESENT TO ST. TAMMANY PARISH STUDENTS

The Youth Service Bureau was founded in 1981 at the request of the Honorable John Greene (ret.) who was seeking an agency to oversee community service work and victim restitution for juvenile offenders. The Crossroads program was developed for that purpose, and the YSB continues to provide those services for hundreds of youthful offenders annually. An essential component of the Crossroads program is delinquency prevention through Law Related Education for adolescents.

YSB is seeking attorneys to volunteer a couple of hours to present Law Related Education to 10th grade students in the St. Tammany Parish School system, using the curriculum that has been approved by the school board. YSB will provide all materials for the students and facilitators, and will schedule the presentations at times that are mutually agreeable to the volunteer and the teacher. Anyone who is interested in this project should contact Crossroads Program Director Holley Young at hyoung@ysbworks.com.
