FREE CLE for Pro Bono Attorney Volunteers at the “Fresh Start” 2019 Event, Friday, August 23 @ 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Hosted by: Justice & Accountability Center of Louisiana
Topic: Expungement law basics in preparation for District Attorney Warren Montgomery’s “Fresh Start” event. Because Justice & Accountability Center is pre-screening all cases for the event, volunteer attorneys need only be familiar with the basics of expungement law, forms, and processes in order to volunteer for at least one shift on Saturday, September 28. (Note, we will not accept ANY walk-ins at the event, which is currently waiting-list only.) In this two-hour CLE, JAC’s Staff Attorney Sarah Whittington will cover the basics of the criminal justice system and its collateral consequences, as well as reviewing required expungement paperwork and relevant laws. Attorneys who attend this CLE are asked to volunteer for at least one three-hour shift on 9/28.

Please join the New Orleans Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, the 22nd JDC Bar Association and the 22nd Judicial District Court as they welcome the Hon. Jane Triche Milazzo, U.S. District Court – EDLA, and the Hon. William Knight,
22nd JDC, for an in-depth discussion on August 9, 2019 at 9am, about the similarities and differences in the state and federal rules of civil procedure – distinctions with significance. Rachael Catalanotto, Vice-President of the 22nd JDC Bar Association, will moderate a discussion geared for practitioners that practice in both federal and state courts who must be familiar with the nuances among the ever-changing rules governing federal and state practice and procedure. In this seminar, the panel will address key topics such as:
- Notable similarities and areas of significant difference between the State and Federal Rules
- The difference between Notice and Fact pleading
- Exceptions and Rule 12 Motion Practice
- Notable differences between State and Federal Rules regarding discovery
- The importance of local rules
- Initial Disclosures and other Pre-Discovery procedures

Judge Martin Coady will be teaching our summer CLE on “Professionalism and Courtroom Decorum” on Tuesday, August 27th at 12:00 p.m. in his Courtroom in Covington. This CLE will offer a lunch and the opportunity for our young lawyers to learn proper courtroom decorum from one of our most experienced Judges and his courtroom staff.
