December 2017 Newsletter
DEAR MEMBERS:
Thank you to Judges William Crain and Scott Gardner, Clerk of Court Melissa Henry, Alex Peragine, Mark Mansfield/Rachel Catalanotto, and Ross Lagarde for making the All Day CLE at the Southern Hotel such a resounding success! The feedback I have received from those who attended has been great and I really appreciate all the speakers, who took the time out of their busy schedules to enlighten, educate, and entertain us!
My term as President of the 22nd JDC Bar Association ends soon. I want to thank Tammy Karas-Griggs, current Vice-President and in-coming President, and Justin Marquez, current Treasurer and in-coming Vice-President, for all of their help with the many tasks that come with being President. And thank you as well to all the sub-committee chairs for all of your work! But most importantly, thank you to Judy Walz, Executive Director of the 22nd JDC Bar Association, for all of her often thankless work for the Bar Association, organizing, communicating, and reminding me to make all of the decisions needed to keep the 22nd JDC Bar Association running. She really is the heart of our Bar Association and I can’t thank her enough.
Lastly, I am glad to announce that on Thursday, December 14th from 7-10 pm, the 22nd JDC Bar Association Christmas Party will return to Dakota’s Restaurant! Great food, open bar, and Christmas cheer! All members and a guest are invited.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The Community Outreach Luncheon is next Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Noon at Gallagher’s Grill in Covington. The cost for lunch is $25. This luncheon is not limited to Attorneys, so bring a friend.
The purpose of these luncheons is to spotlight local non-profit organizations and evaluate their needs and how the legal community can help. It is also a fundraising lunch for the non-profits. There is a suggested donation of $50.00; it is not a requirement to attend the lunch.
At the last luncheon, NAMI won the vote of those in attendance to be the next spotlighted organization. Judge Garcia and Nick Richard will give an overview of what NAMI does within our community.
The menu is:
Salad, choice of Fried Pecan Catfish or Chicken Lafayette, Desert and drinks.
Please RSVP today if you plan to attend: judy@22ndjdcbar.org. You can pay in advance for your lunch at the link below.

FAMILY LAW:
Our final CLE for 2017 will be December 19th at the Courthouse in Covington, from 9-10. Our speaker will be the St. Tammany Parish Coroner, Dr. Charles Preston. Dr. Preston will discuss issues his office deals with that are relevant to family law practitioners such as continuing tutorship, Coroner protective holds, depression, stress, and risky behaviors prevalent in family law matters. Light breakfast will be provided. The cost of the CLE is $20. We are also asking for all attendees to bring a “gift” for a displaced teen in our parish. The items will be distributed through “One Way Love” nonprofit organization which supports teens whose families are in crisis due to incarceration, illness, death or substance abuse of one or both of the parents with a goal of maintaining the child enrolled in high school and “walking on the stage” at graduation. The teens’ wish list was very basic and more of necessity than luxury, such as pajamas, snack bars, gift cards to purchase school supplies, headphones, etc. Any donations are appreciated.

The St. Tammany Parish Clerk of Court would ask that all members visit their website if they are interested in attending an overview of the new civil e-filing processes. Go to the clerk’s website at www.sttammanyclerk.org and on the front page there is a “Notice” in red that gives the information and link to register for this overview of the e-filing. So far we have two dates scheduled, however if the classes are full and we see the need to add more dates, we will do so.
Also, we will be scheduling a session in the Slidell area soon, if they cannot come to Covington. Our website will keep everyone informed of these sessions, locations and dates.
