Child Marriage: The Eras Tour
Professor Sandi Varnado, Esq., Loyola University New Orleans, College of Law

Explore the evolving landscape of child marriage law in the United States in this timely and eye opening CLE. This program traces the dramatic shift from early common law acceptance to today’s patchwork of state restrictions—where only sixteen states have fully banned the practice and many others still permit it with varying forms of adult authorization. Attendees will also examine the sweeping federal proposal introduced in 2024, the Child Marriage Prevention Act, a landmark effort that, had it passed, could have reshaped national policy through data collection, state incentives, federal property restrictions, and immigration law reforms. With the future of child marriage legislation still uncertain, this session offers essential insight for practitioners seeking to understand where the law has been, where it stands, and where it may be headed next.

11:00-11:15 Break

Noon Roundtable if you choose!
Hon. Mary Devereux (retired)

You are invited to an informal “Noon Roundtable” with Retired Judge Mary Devereux. Kindly pick up your lunch from the dining area (included with your registration fee) and join us back in the seminar room. Over lunch, Judge Devereux will share key takeaways from her judicial career, offering insights from both the bench and beyond that shaped her approach to justice. She will also discuss her transition into mediation and explore how mediation can serve as an effective, efficient alternative to traditional litigation. This session is designed to be interactive with attendees participating and asking questions throughout the conversation.

1:30-2:30
Partition to Transition
Andrew K. Hoffman, CFP, CDFA, CQS
Heather Gardner, CFP

“Partition to Transition” breaks down how increasingly complex family finances demand strategic, informed asset division. This session highlights how financial experts support counsel in allocating assets and debts, drafting enforceable partition agreements, and guiding clients through both the financial questions that arise during divorce and the practical implementation that follows. Topics include dividing investment and retirement accounts, navigating pension and QDRO pitfalls, using insurance and annuities to secure settlements, protecting clients when allocating debt, avoiding Social Security missteps, and helping clients take control of their post divorce financial lives without added burden on counsel.

2:30-3:30
Organ and Tissue Donation Considerations for Families and Estate Planning Practitioners (PROFESSIONALISM)
Bailey Dirmann Morse, Esq., Chief Legal Officer,
Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency

This session will equip attorneys with the practical knowledge needed to navigate one of the most sensitive and often misunderstood areas of client planning. Led by Bailey Dirmann Morse, Chief Legal Officer of the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency, this session demystifies the legal framework governing anatomical gifts, clarifies the distinction between donor preference and binding directives, and explains the real legal impact of First Person Authorization. Participants will learn how to spot common estate planning pitfalls that create conflict or undermine donor intent, and how to ensure a client’s donation decisions are accurately and consistently reflected across their planning documents.

3:30-3:45 Break

3:45-4:45
Succession For Family Law Attorneys: What you need to know (and what you can’t ignore)
Christina Falco Baldwin, Esq.

Christina Falco Baldwin will offer a clear, practical look at the high stakes intersection of divorce, death, and community property. Family lawyers are often the first to spot succession issues—sometimes in the chaotic hours after a client’s spouse passes—and missing those red flags can create costly malpractice exposure. This program unpacks the real world problems that arise when a divorce is pending at death, how community property claims shift after remarriage, the complications of children from prior relationships, and the nuances of spousal usufruct. Attorneys from every discipline will walk away with a sharper understanding of how succession law quietly shapes the cases they handle every day.

Registration is essential to prepare for food and CLE materials, so please submit your application as early as possible.
