May 2016 Newsletter
DEAR MEMBERS:
Thank you for your continued support and renewed participation in our monthly luncheons and section committees. We look forward to continue working with you to provide an association that is responsive to your practice.
Thank you to Alison Bondurant, who spoke on “Special Issues for Estate Law,” at our last luncheon. Her discussion of when and how to use trusts was so informative that we received multiple inquiries from our members of our bar about how to get in touch with her as it included information that impacts us personally.
Our May CLE will be held at Keith Young’s Restaurant on Friday, May 20th. Our guest speakers will be two former Louisiana State Bar Association Presidents: Marta-Ann Schnable and Michael Patterson. They will speak on “Venus & Mars: The Role of Gender in Negotiations.” Anyone who has the pleasure of knowing either of these individuals will attest that this presentation is bound to be entertaining, as well as useful.
Lunch will start at Noon and the cost is $25; the CLE begins as 12:30 and is $15 for members. Please RSVP to Judy at judy@22ndjdcbar.org if you plan to attend so that we can ensure that we have enough handouts for everyone, the restaurant can have enough food and seating, and we can get started on time.
Elizabeth Sconzert, President
DONATIONS
Thank you to all who made donations to the recent flood victims in our area. We were able to help several families in our legal community and your generosity shows the compassion we share in the time of need.
2016 RED MASSRed Mass will be held this Friday, May 6th at 11:00 a.m. at SSA Chapel. There will be a reception following at the law office of Alan Zaunbrecher 406 N. Florida Street, Suite 2, Covington, LA 70433. Everyone is invited.
CLEThe monthly CLEs are held on the third Friday of each month, January through October, at Keith Young’s Restaurant. Lunch is $25 and is served at 12:00 p.m. and the CLE is $15 for members, from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Mark your calendars now for the rest of the monthly meetings: June 17th, July 15th, August 19th, September 16th, October 21st and November 18th (all day CLE).
INFORMATION FROM THE CLERKS OFFICEThe clerks’ offices have asked me to notify the bar associations that, effective May 1, 2016, the court has raised the curator fee from $250 to $350. This increase is to apply to requests for the appointment of curators made on May 1, 2016 and thereafter. Thanks for disseminating this information.

The annual Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West Bench, Bar, & Badge build is scheduled for Friday, May 13th, and Saturday, May 14th.
Habitat is asking that we partner with them by volunteering on the construction site in Covington or at the ReStore in Mandeville, by making a financial contribution, and/or by contributing an item or service to build a safe, decent, affordable home.
I have been told that the Saturday, May 14th, build is full with volunteers from the District Attorney’s Office. Let’s try to the fill the Friday, May 13th, build with those of us on the other side of the aisle.
For more information, please contact Jennifer Messina at jmessina@habitatstw.org.
