Michele Avery, who is a forensic accountant and has experience with litigated matters and business valuations will present “Understanding Basic Accounting and Reading Financial Statements”. Ms. Avery’s presentation will focus on providing a practical understanding of accounting for attorneys focused on commercial litigation and community property partitions. This CLE is for you if you are interested in understanding how to identify accounting and financial documents essential to a case, obtaining a high-level understanding of financial statements and accounting software, and obtaining a high-level understanding of the major tax forms and how they come together in a tax return. Additionally, you will obtain a basic understanding of the types of engagements CPAs undertake and CPA work product (for example, understanding the difference between audits, tax returns and expert reports from a CPA professional standards perspective). How are your communication skills? Kristi Louque will be here to help with “It’s Not What You Say, It’s How You Say It- The Attorney-Mediator’s Guide To Powerful Public Speaking and Effective Communication”. Ms. Loque’s teaching objectives include addressing Public Speaking Skills for Lawyers, Effective Communication with Clients and Opposing Counsel, and Mediation Tips from a Mediator (AKA the things the mediator wishes you knew). If you are looking for ways to correct speaking flaws or habits, how to connect with your audience or tips on how to remain professional and honest when dealing with heated subjects or bad news on a case, then please join us! This presentation does encompass skills related to Rules 1.1-1.4 of the Rules of Professional Conduct and has been approved for 1 hour of professionalism credit. “What I Would Know If I Were You- Behind the Scenes Tips from the Staff Attorney’s Perspective”. Staff Attorneys Becky Mighton and George Amann will give insights from their point of view- a “nuts and bolts” discussion about communication with the Court (whether by phone/email/fax), presentation in court (written and/or oral), and enhancing your case for appeal. If you have children between the ages of 6 and 18, on Friday, July 25th, the 22nd JDC Bar Association will host its second annual Bring Your Kids to Court Day.
More details will be coming soon, but the event will likely take place in the morning and end with lunch, with activities catering to different age groups and interests.
An adult must attend with the child and participation will be limited, so mark your calendar and watch for registration to hit your inbox!
