COMMUNITY OUTREACH

It’s difficult to realize there are people in our own community going hungry every day. I recently learned of an elderly woman, living alone and without transportation, who depended upon a local program to deliver her meals several times a week. When the new driver didn’t know the lady was deaf, he didn’t go into her home and leave the meals because there was no answer at the door. Her service was ultimately discontinued, and she was later found dead of starvation.

I have also recently heard about the plight of low income single moms living right here in our neighborhoods who make barely enough to cover their meager rent and utilities but too much for food stamps or food bank assistance. These women are often left with the difficult choice of quitting a job to qualify for assistance or become unemployed and possibly homeless so that they can receive assistance.

It is heartbreaking that this goes on in our community.

As the Community Outreach Chair, I am teaming up with “Project Blessings All Year” to help get basic food items to the pantries and tables of truly needy families in St. Tammany. To kick off our program, we will bring boxes to participating law offices to be filled with food items needed by a particular family in our community and will have the boxes picked up and delivered to those families. Depending on the success of our efforts, we can either continue working with “Project Blessings” or establish our own program. In any event, I intend that our boxes will be nicely labeled so that our community will know our 22nd JDC Bar Association is providing and contributing, and I intend to have this program continue on into years to come.

A small act on the part of your office would mean the world to those going hungry. If you would like to participate or have any questions, please contact Judy at judy@22ndjdcbar.org
