August 2022 Newsletter

Dear Members

“This morning, the sun endures past dawn.
I realize it is August: the summer’s last stand.”
~ Sara Baume

Here we are at the doorstep of the most bittersweet month of the year ~ August; when the end of summer signals the coming of autumn. The sound of crashing waves and sunsets on the beach quickly transition into the ringing of school bells and the glow of Friday Night lights. I also welcome August because it gives me a second chance to make good on those New Year’s Resolutions I set for myself seven months ago.

For our Association, August brings two CLE opportunities that will allow our members to Refocus, Reconnect and Renew.

*Our first CLE is tomorrow, August 2nd at 9:00 a.m. at the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center

State versus Federal Rules of Civil Procedure – Similarities and Differences

The Hon. Greg G. Guidry (U.S. District Court – EDLA), Hon. William Knight (retired from the 22nd JDC), and Hon. William H. Burris (22nd JDC) for an in-depth discussion on August 2, 2022 at 9am about the similarities and differences in the state and federal rules of civil procedure – distinctions with significance. Christine M. Calogero, New Orleans Chapter of the Federal Bar Association Board member, and Bailey D. Morse, President of the 22nd JDC Bar Association, will moderate a discussion geared for practitioners that practice in both federal and state courts who must be familiar with the nuances among the ever-changing rules governing federal and state practice and procedure.

A One Hour Free CLE followed by a reception. To Register contact Amanda Kaiser, at 504-589-7990 or email at akaiser@nofba.org.

*Our second CLE this month will be on Friday, August 19th at Beau Chene Country Club

Reviewing the Military Lending Act

Attorney Daniel Oppenheim will be the speaker, explaining changes when Congress enacted certain laws that took effect in 2016 which mandates certain rates and terms when lending to active duty military, their spouses and even their children. Given that we have numerous military bases within our metro area, the subject has import for both creditor and debtor attorneys. The history behind the law is interesting and it is separate and apart from the SCRA (Servicemen’s Civil Relief Act).

Lunch service featuring a Chef’s Choice* selection will begin at Noon and the cost is $28. The cost of the CLE is $15 for members, $25 for non-members. Please click on the link below to register and pay for lunch and the CLE. If you paid for the annual CLEs, please click on the link below and pay for lunch only.

*Chef’s choice includes soup or salad, entree with two sides, dessert, coffee/tea/water.
